STORY

Cedarkit is born, by all outward appearances to a respectable and notable Shadowclan family line. With maternal roots tracing back to former Enforcer Commander, Cougarivy, and late Medicine Cat, Elmshadow, and his father a respected, albeit cold, Shadowclan warrior, Cedarkit exudes a kit born to privilege among the forest's fiercest clan. Cedarkit's true paternal lineage, stemming from a forbidden affair across the border, is a secret his mother has opted to bring with her to her grave. Though Ravenmist is adept at conealing that which she does not want discovered, Cedarkit surmises too young that that grave is approaching sooner than he is ready for. Ravenmist is an old queen. She had been with her Shadowclan mate, Stonebriar, since both were freshly named warriors though kits were never a heavily sought after step in their long relationship nor had they ever just happened as they seemed so often to do. Until it did, when the mated pair were well into their 52nd moons. It was a surprise but uncontested beyond idle nursery gossip as Ravenmist and Stonebriar had become a steady pair within the clan for over 8 seasons. Kitting was hard on Ravenmist and she never seemed to fully recover, contending constantly with lethargy and shortness of breath.

Cedarkit is born the eldest in Ravenmist's litter of three, including sister Pinekit and brother Sprucekit. Pinekit was born half the size of her brothers with a back leg that never developed and a wheeze in her chest that never abated. Before the kits' eyes opened, Pinekit passed away peacefully in her sleep.

Late into 3 moons old, Shadowclan brought a battle to Thunderclan. Amid the chaos, Cedarkit and Sprucekit escaped camp and explored out in the forest. Their adventure brought them near death by a passing owl, which Cedarkit spotted and was able to get Sprucekit and himself into a bush for cover from, then again when Sprucekit slipped into a stream. Along the bank as Sprucekit was swept away, Cedarkit spotted a strange tailless cat who made a branch appear over the stream which he was able to use to pull Sprucekit out of the water. The two were found some time later, hidden in the hollow of a tree, by Grimpaw. For their escapade, they each earned an extra moon in the nursery.

Newly 4 moons old, quiet Cedarkit and bold Sprucekit were playing in the clearing. The days were growing warmer and the kits' energy was increasing with the waxing daylight. Ravenmist lay by herself, bathing in the sun keeping an ever-vigilant watch over her romping sons. Sprucekit decided they would hunt using the freshkill pile. Cedarkit noticed it first, the rat Sprucekit had in his sights was not freshkill, but a digging intruder. He was too late to react. Sprucekit pounced for the rat and, just as instantly, the rat turned and got one bite in on Sprucekit's neck and shoulder area. Ravenmist was on the rat before it could do more, killing it after a short scuffle. But she was too late for Sprucekit who bled out into the clearing as she tended to him and Cedarkit watched on helplessly.
