STORY

Ravenmist was born to Cougarivy's first known litter within Shadowclan in a point of turmoil for Elmshadow as his affair with Cougarivy is brought to light to his mate Goldenstep and Elmshadow is raising a litter by each of them (Frostkit, Mothkit, and Ravenkit by Cougarivy; Sunsetkit, Ashkit, and Chamomilekit by Goldenstep). Cougarivy is neglectful and Elmshadow is hard and distant. She learns to guard her emotions, her weaknesses and her affection. She silently observes, keeps her head down, and works hard, generally unnoticed but never found lacking.

Early in their warriorhood, Stonebriar takes notice of Ravenmist. He's steady and steadfast, loyal to Shadowclan and hard-working. He's notably respected by Elmshadow for being strong, dedicated, and helpful while staying tactfully out from underpaw, even as an apprentice. But he's dull and duty-bound, humorless and dry and Ravenmist never returns his interests. Around 19 moons old, Ravenmist has a run-in with a new Riverclan warrior at a gathering, Otterstream. He's funny and positive sleak dark brown tom with black undertones and amber-gold eyes. He wears his heart on his foreleg, adoring his large family. He's loyal and not ambitious and different from everything she's used to being surrounded by the legacy she was shrouded in as daughter to Elmshadow and Cougarivy.

When Ravenmist is 24 moons, securely in her warriorhood, Cougarivy goes missing and Elmshadow is killed in the woods by a snake bite. She's left reeling with difficult emotions. Cougarivy's disappearance shook the clan as the loss of their enforcer commander, but had little affect on Ravenmist. Elmshadow's death was a blow that didn't make sense to her. He had been an ever-looming presence she hadn't noticed until its sudden absence. During this time of turbulence, she rapidly progressed her friendship with the Riverclan tom Otterstream until it went too far and she panicked, withdrawing completely and throwing herself into the stability that Stonebriar could provide.

She never fell in love with Stonebriar but the two learned to live cordially and comfortably. While she never forgot Otterstream, the seasons passing dulled the ache of losing him. Ravenmist and Stonebriar never had kits though they never pointedly tried to begin a family, it was not a priority for either of them and both focused on their warrior duties.

Until Ravenmist was 45 moons and she had a chance encounter with Otterstream at the border. Otterstream hadn't changed a bit and Ravenmist rationalized that it had been over 20 moons since their affair and there wouldn't be any harm in catching up. She was not prepared for how quickly and devastatingly all of those old feelings came flooding back and Ravenmist and Otterstream begin an illicit affair. Six moons into the affair, they are nearly caught by a nighttime Shadowclan patrol and the reality of her position and everything she is risking hits Ravenmist. She heartbreakingly cuts her ties with Otterstream again though returning to a life with Stonebriar only becomes all the more taxing. Shortly after she breaks off the affair, she realizes she is pregnant. Shadowclan, along with Stonebriar, assume they had a surprise miracle litter but Ravenmist knows the truth of it and commits to taking the secret to the grave with her in order to protect Elmshadow's legacy and her kits' reputation.
